What are the kids doing in class?
Grammar/Elementary stage: The teacher leads a formal art lesson, where the picture correlates with the history topic. They also do a craft, listen to literature/read aloud, and make a map of the historical area. Students also review memory cards and complete an outline of the information covered that day. Art history, corresponding to the historical period, is also introduced in class. Lastly, grammar stage students learn and practice an oral presentation for each session. Don't forget to pack a lunch as kids enjoy a social break time as well.
The classic kinder kids are getting an overview of all historical periods and geography through arts, crafts, and stories. These students also participate in an art lesson.
How do we prepare for class?
Grammar stage students read or listen to a chapter in The Story of the World and learn the memory cards before attending class. All students will have a portfolio at the end of the year to take home.
When and where do you meet for class?
All classes will meet on Wednesdays from 10 am until 2 pm in Santa Ana, near the 55 & 5 freeway interchange, around the corner from Old Town Tustin.
How often does the class meet?
Classes meet once a week. The students have a week or two off between six week sessions. The exact calendar of dates is listed under teh 2011-2012 History tab.
Are you a vendor with charter schools?
We are currently a vendor with Sky Mountain Charter and Julian Charter School.
What costs are involved and what supplies do I need?
There is a $40 registration fee. Each 6 week session is $180 per student. All "in class" supplies are included. Tuition is payable via paypal or a purchase order through an approved vendor.
Students only need Story of the World. All art supplies and memory cards are provided. The teacher uses the "activity guide" for some of the projects and maps in class. The CD's or activity guide are completely optional. (Students will be using the maps from the activity guide in class)
Do you offer discounts for siblings?
I am offering a sibling discount, on a trial basis, starting in January 2012. Second and additional siblings will be $150. This discount is feasible when our enrollment is at an optimum level. So this discount can be removed at any point and I will notify by email for the following session with any changes to tuition prices.
What age of students does the class accommodate?
There is no strict age or grade level cut off for any class. I believe each student should be where they fit best developmentally, not just by age. The grammar stage/elementary class does not require any reading and only minimal writing. There is a certain amount of fine motor coordination needed for the art work, but the teacher modifies the art project as needed.Students need to be able to be attentive and cooperative for the duration of the class. Roughly, the age range is 1st -5th grade.
In 2011-12, we are adding a "classic kinder" class for five and six year olds. There is no exact age for this class. It is intended for younger students who would benefit from an overview of history and geography and/or would have more difficulty comprehending the Story of the World chapters.
Is this a "drop off" class?
Yes, drop your students off and enjoy some free time to relax or get some errands done.
How do I register?
Contact Erica to check availability and whether the class would work for your family. Then you can download the registration paperwork, pay the non refundable registration fee, and you will be officially enrolled.
